Dr. Kaigham (Ken) J. Gabriel


Co-Founder, Chairman, and Chief Technology Officer

Dr. Kaigham (Ken) J. Gabriel is widely regarded as the architect of the Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) industry.

Joining AT&T; Bell Labs in 1985, he pioneered the field of MEMS and started the silicon MEMS effort, focused on applications in photonic and network systems. During a sabbatical year, Dr. Gabriel was a Visiting Professor at the University of Tokyo where he led joint projects at IBM Japan, Toyota and Ricoh.

From 1992 to 1997 Dr. Gabriel was at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), where he started the agency's MEMS Program and grew it to over $70 million and 80 development projects nationwide. He was appointed Director of the Electronics Technology Office, responsible for roughly half of the Federal investments in electronics technology including advanced lithography, optoelectronics and high-definition displays.

In 2003 Dr. Gabriel was named a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum. He is the founding Executive Director of the MEMS Industry Group, and a Director of three MEMS-focused companies. He co-chaired the Defense Science Board (DSB) 1999 Summer Study on 21st Century Technology Trends and Evolution, and has been called upon to provide technology briefings to former Secretary of Defense William Perry.

Dr. Gabriel holds an S.M. and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
